Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that Adam B. Amyx Jr., 38, of Lawrence, agreed to plead no contest to attempted second-degree murder of a female passerby he tried to throw into the Kansas River. 

The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on or about April 14, 2022 when Amyx lifted the then 21-year-old woman over the railing when the woman passed Amyx as she walked north bound on the south-bound bridge. The woman kicked Amyx several times and was able to run away when Amyx released his hold.

Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that Adrian J. Martinez, 39, of Lawrence, was sentenced to a total of 109 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence and aggravated battery while driving under the influence for causing the 2022 New Year’s Day crash that killed a 20-year-old Lawrence man.

Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez announced today that a Lawrence 17 year old has been charged with first degree murder of a Lawrence 14 year old.

The State will seek to prosecute the 17 year old as an adult.

The 17 year old is currently in custody with a detention hearing scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, in the juvenile division.

The arrest was the result of an investigation by the Lawrence Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

This individual should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that Bruce S. Springsteen, 65, of Lawrence, was sentenced to a total of 92 months in prison for attempted sexual exploitation of a child by conducting internet searches for child sexual abuse material and violating his probation terms.

“The children in these images are revictimized every time their sexual abuse is viewed,” District Attorney Valdez said. “My office remains unwavering in our commitment to disrupt this horrific crime.”

Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that Kenneth W. Mills, 36, of De Soto, was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility for parole for 25 years for criminal sodomy of a three- to four-year-old at the time of offense.

In August, a jury convicted Mills of engaging in sexual contact with a female child who was under his care and residing in his Lawrence home in 2010 and 2011.
