Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that a jury returned a guilty verdict on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against Brandon A. Seepersad, 26, of Lawrence.

Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred shortly before midnight on March 27, 2021 when Seepersad pointed a loaded gun at a tow truck driver who was authorized to tow unpermitted cars from an apartment complex located at 1000 Emery Road in Lawrence. At the time of the incident, the tow truck driver had been in the process of loading Seepersad’s vehicle for towing.

“This was a terrifying experience for the victim Mr. Seepersad held at gunpoint and put the welfare of others in danger as well,” District Attorney Valdez said. “I thank the jury for their service and for standing up against senseless gun violence in our community.”

The State was represented by Chief Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Tatum and Assistant District Attorney Christen Secrest. The case was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department.

Sentencing was set by Judge Amy Hanley for 10 a.m., March 24, 2023 at the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center.

Seepersad faces 11 to 13 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for aggravated assault.
