Sometimes seniors or their loved ones need someone to talk through life changes that occur as we get older. There are many services and programs throughout Douglas County to make these transitions easier, but sometimes it’s hard to navigate them. SRC is here to help.

Legal Assistance

Financial

SRC staff can assist you with emergency expense resources throughout Douglas County. Contact us for more information.

Prepare and manage benefits, payments and get information. Contact the Social Security Administration directly by calling 800-772-1213.

Medicare and Insurance

Meet with a SHICK counselor to review your final plan selections once you have your Medicare card and attended a Welcome to Medicare presentation. Visit the scheduling portal to register and make an appointment.

Medicare Part D provides drug coverage. The Extra Help program helps with the cost of your prescription drugs, like deductibles and copays. You can apply for Extra Help any time before or after you enroll in Part D.

The "Medicare & You" handbook is your official guide to Medicare. We mail an updated printed handbook to all Medicare households in late September. You can sign up for the the electronic version of the handbook and have access to the most up-to-date Medicare information faster.

The Shopper's Guide is a free tool provided by the Kansas Department of Insurance. It is used to find the estimated premium rates for your Medicare supplement plans. It will show you the current estimated premiums and other relevant plan information.

Long-term care is the help you may need if you are unable to care for yourself because of a prolonged illness or disability. People often think of long-term care as taking place in a nursing home. In fact, “long-term care” refers to a variety of private and semi-private care situations and services, including home health care, adult day care, and nursing facilities. Get information from the Kansas Insurance Department.

For those who require assistive devices, economics shouldn’t be a barrier to hearing health. Driven by the missions of organizations like Sertoma and Hearing Charities of America, and through the generosity of so many others, hearing aids are now available to those who might otherwise go without. Mom's Meals

CHAMPSS is managed by the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging (JAAA). This meal program allows seniors age 60 and older to choose from different entrees and eat any meal spontaneously at their convenience seven days a week at various CHAMPSS locations. There is a suggested donation per meal, and participants must attend an orientation to enroll in the program.

SRC works with Extension Master Food volunteers from the K-State Research and Extension office to assist with SNAP applications. Contact us to make an appointment to see if you qualify.

Douglas County residents benefit from food pantries found throughout the county. Contact us to help locate the pantry closest to you.

Many people enjoy the convenience of their groceries delivered from their favorite store right to their house. Other people love picking up their groceries curbside. Many stores in Douglas County offer one or both of these options. Contact us to learn more or contact your favorite store and ask for their delivery or pick up department.

Understanding the differences between different types of senior living options can be overwhelming and confusing. It can help to have an objective expert to talk you through the differences (aging in place, 55+ independent living communities, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, continuum of care, home plus, and others). Contact SRC’s Health and Human Services team to schedule an appointment or to receive a list of area options.

For those who want to age in place, there are multiple support services designed to help delay or prevent moving to a facility. Contact SRC’s Health and Human Services team to schedule an appointment or to receive a list of area agencies.

Help Around the Home

The Safe Winter Walkways program is an excellent resource for members of our community who are physically unable to keep their sidewalks clear during snow events. This program runs on volunteers. To sign up or volunteer, visit the City of Lawrence website for more information.

SRC partners with various organizations throughout Douglas County to help homeowners find dependable home maintenance and repair. Contact us for more information.

Transportation

Senior Wheels, a division of the Senior Resource Center has been providing origin-to-destination transportation to seniors across Douglas County since August 1973. Other options are also available in Douglas County and Lawrence. Go to Transportation page for details.

Independence, Inc. Transportation

Since 1978, Independence, Inc. has served as a resource in Lawrence and Northeast Kansas through our mission to maximize the independence of people with disabilities through advocacy, peer support, training, transportation and community education.

To schedule a ride, call 785-843-5576 from 8:30 AM - 5 PM Monday through Friday.

Lawrence Transit System: The T and T-Lift Paratransit

The T provides fixed-route and on-demand service in Lawrence. Visit their website for routes and on-demand information.

Every day, the Senior Resource Center helps older adults and their families find the resources to help them live their best possible quality of life.

Often individuals are not even sure what questions to ask, but they simply know they need help. The staff at SRC will work hard to sort through your needs and identify the resources which can help. Often, we can also help prioritize which issues need to be addressed first. Contact SRC’s Health and Human Services team to schedule an appointment. Appointments can be over the phone, in-person, or even over email.
