Rising to the Challenge: New Directions in Behavioral Health
The “Rising to the Challenge” digital report is designed to share the multi-faceted and collaborative work being done to improve and expand behavioral healthcare in Douglas County, Kansas. The Community Health Plan outlines ways to improve the behavioral health of Douglas County residents by focusing this work in three key areas: 1) Prevention, 2) Integration, and 3) Access.
Behavioral Health Report 2023
Douglas County community agencies are working together to provide a behavioral health system of care. They are prioritizing prevention, promoting integration and increasing access to care. Among the efforts are: launching the Engage Douglas County coalition, implementing the Handle with Care program, increasing supportive housing, and opening the Treatment and Recovery Center.

Prioritizing Prevention
Prevention is central to helping maintain a healthy community, heading off behavioral health crises before they start. Here, you’ll see the work we’re doing to educate youth and adults about how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, noticing the signs of depression and anxiety and taking positive steps to address them.
Promoting Integration
Integration encompasses our community’s efforts to ensure that the different components of our medical and emergency ecosystems interface smoothly and efficiently to best serve the behavioral health care consumer. We’re making it easier for individuals to heal, recognizing that health is complex and multifaceted.
Improving Access
Access demonstrates our commitment to the belief that all Douglas County residents deserve affordable, local behavioral health care that fits into their busy lifestyles.
