The Seventh Judicial District is the state District Court for Douglas County, Kansas. The cities of Baldwin City, Eudora and Lawrence have their own municipal courts which are separate from state District Court. 

General Jurisdiction

State District Courts are courts of general jurisdiction. That jurisdiction extends to all civil and criminal matters that are recognized under state law, including lawsuits for damages to personal rights and property, divorce and child custody, probate and administration of estates, guardianships/conservatorships, care of the mentally ill, juvenile matters and small claims. 

Appeals

Decisions of the District Court are generally subject to appeal. Appeals can be taken to the Kansas Court of Appeals and, in some instances, directly to the Kansas Supreme Court.

Court Administrator

The Court Administrator supervises and coordinates the administrative functions and operations of the district court, supervises and directs the activities of non-judicial employees of the court and performs other duties that are designated by the chief judge, required by law or by the state Judicial Administrator.

What are the hours for the office and where is it located?

The District Court Trustee is located on the main floor of the Judicial Building at 111 E. 11th Street, Lawrence, Kansas 66044. The office is accessible in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the office is open during the noon hour.

What services will be provided?

The District Court Trustee is responsible for all matters relating to the establishment, modification, and enforcement of support orders issued by the Douglas County District Court. The District Court Trustee is empowered to pursue all civil remedies which would be available to a recipient in this regard.

When did the office open?

The office opened on May 1, 1995. All orders for support entered effective January 1, 1995, require the District Court Trustee to provide enforcement services for the case. Payments are to be made through the Kansas Payment Center, and are disbursed within 48 hours of receipt.

Which cases are handled and what is the fee?

For any new or modified support order entered on or after January 1, 1995, the District Court Trustee will automatically provide enforcement services. A mandatory fee of 5% will be deducted from support collected to defray the expenses of the office. In most instances, the value of the services provided will exceed the cost.
