Natural and Cultural Heritage Grant Program
Developed alongside the Heritage Conservation Council in 2011, the Natural and Cultural Heritage Grant Program provides funding to organizations to support a variety of natural and cultural heritage conservation projects in Douglas County.
Natural & Cultural Heritage Grant Program Overview
The Natural and Cultural Heritage Grant Program is currently accepting applications through March 5 for funding in 2026. This is an annual grant program designed to support community projects that protect, conserve, and share Douglas County’s heritage resources.
Grants are awarded in a competitive cycle beginning in January each year. With administrative assistance from the Heritage Coordinator, the Heritage Conservation Council (HCC) reviews applications and makes recommendations of grant awards to the Board of County Commissioners.
Grant awards may be up to $60,000 and projects should be completed within two years. In 2026, $250,000 is available for Natural and Cultural Heritage Grant awards. Of the total funding available, $40,000 is available specifically for Seed grant awards (requests of $5,000 or less). Please review the Grant Guidelines for more information about this program, including project and applicant eligibility requirements.
NEW THIS YEAR: Applicants requesting $5,000 or less (Seed Grant applicants) will have a shortened application, requiring fewer responses to narrative questions. Seed Grant applications will be reviewed independently of the Target grant applications, ensuring fairness in the review process.
Grant Information Session
We will be hosting a Grant Information Session on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 6-7:30 pm at the Douglas County Public Works Building (3755 E 25th St, Lawrence, KS 66046). Anyone interested in learning more about the grant program is welcome to attend. We will give a general overview of the program, walk through how to apply, and answer questions that you may have. Attendance at the information session is not required to apply.
