Applying for a Property Tax Exemption
The Kansas Board of Tax Appeals (“Board”) determines qualification for a property tax exemption.
- Start the application process with the Board, complete the general exemption application found in the Appraiser Documents section on the home page. Be sure to include current contact information such as phone number and email address.
- Attach all required documents that are listed in the application.
Some requests for exemption will require a supplemental form and documents. Common supplemental forms are also included in the Appraiser Documents section on the home page. Please note that not all supplemental forms may be included in this list – contact the Appraiser’s Office if you have any questions.
- Sign the application in the presence of a notary.
- Include a check made out to the Kansas Board of Tax Appeals for the appropriate fee amount listed below. BOTA does not accept cash or credit for this fee.
- Mail or drop off the application with the Douglas County Appraiser’s Office. Do not mail it to the Board directly.
We will review your application for missing information and/or paperwork, as well as the appropriate fee amount and will contact you if necessary.
We will then make our recommendation to the Board and forward your application to them. If we have not provided one, we will send you a copy of the application form(s) and our recommendation to the Board for your records.
The Board will review your application and make its decision regarding your property tax exemption status. Please note that the decision can take two to six months.
