Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that Philip M. Gabler, 29, of Lawrence, was sentenced to 120 days in the Douglas County Correctional Facility for domestic battery and criminal damage to property, both misdemeanor convictions.

On March 13, 2024, a jury found Gabler guilty of the charges that stemmed from an incident that occurred on January 3, 2023, in the 1000 block of Tennessee Street. Gabler kicked in the front door of the home of his former girlfriend. The woman sustained injuries to her forehead from the door’s frame when Gabler forcibly entered. The woman later recovered from her injuries.

“Domestic violence causes not only physical harm but also leaves lasting emotional scars that erode the fundamental sense of security that everyone deserves, especially in your own home,” District Attorney Valdez said.

Chief Judge James McCabria sentenced Gabler to serve 120 days in jail for both convictions. The sentences will run concurrently.

Assistant District Attorney Brian Deiter represented the State of Kansas. The matter was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department.
