Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that Bruce J. Holloway, Jr., 21, of Lawrence, was sentenced to a total of 38 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for attempted criminal possession of a weapon by a felon and violating his probation.

“Convicted violent individuals know that they cannot possess firearms,” District Attorney Valdez said. “Together with our law enforcement partners, we are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our community by keeping dangerous offenders and weapons off our streets.”

Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred in the 1100 block of Massachusetts Street in the early morning hours on May 14, 2023, when Holloway tried to obtain a Glock 19 9 mm handgun following a disturbance.

Judge Amy Hanley sentenced Holloway, who pleaded no contest in October 2023, to 11 months for his weapon-related conviction that will run consecutively to his sentence for violating probation. Holloway, who was sentenced in 2022 for two counts of aggravated battery, will serve 27 months total for violating his probation.

Assistant District Attorney Christen Secrest represented the State of Kansas. The matter was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department.
