Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that George Joseph Burgess Jr., 45, was sentenced to serve 618 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for one count of rape followed by 25 years for a second rape conviction.
“We are grateful for the strength of the survivor and her family and friends who stood by her through a difficult trial,” District Attorney Valdez said. “Today, justice has been served. My office will continue to work tirelessly to protect our children and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.”
Judge Sally Pokorny also sentenced Burgess, who was found guilty by a jury in June, to 25 years for each of his six convictions of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The sentences are to run concurrently to Burgess’ sentencing for his rape convictions.
Charges stemmed from incidents that occurred between January 1, 2017 and February 7, 2019 when the child was between 6 and 8 years old.
District Attorney Valdez represented the State of Kansas. The matter was investigated by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the Eudora Police Department, the Children's Advocacy Center of Douglas County and the Kansas Department for Children and Families. Members of Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) provided the survivor with support during sentencing.
