Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that Armeer Asad II, 34, of Chicago, was sentenced to 19 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for possessing fentanyl and fleeing police.
“This kind of reckless behavior that threatens the safety of everyone on the streets in our community must be met with serious consequences,” District Attorney Valdez said.
Judge Amy Hanley sentenced Asad to 19 months in prison for the fentanyl possession conviction and six months in prison for his fleeing police conviction. Both sentences are to run concurrently. He also was sentenced to 12 months of post-release supervision. Asad pleaded no contest to both charges in April 2024.
Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on September 4, 2022, when police were called to the 1000 block of N. 3rd St., in Lawrence, for a welfare check on an adult male who was sleeping in his vehicle. When awoken by police, Asad fled the scene, traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour eastbound on Interstate 70. His vehicle struck the center median wall when Kansas Highway Patrol troopers deployed stop sticks. Asad then left the vehicle, jumped a metal fence before fleeing into a field. Police were able to later locate and arrest Asad.
Senior Assistant District Attorney Adam Carey represented the State of Kansas. The matter was investigated by the Lawrence Kansas Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
