Jury convicts Lawrence man of domestic violence
June 27, 2024 3:37 pm
Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that a jury found Servando J. Martinez Vazquez, 24, of Lawrence, guilty of domestic battery and criminal damage to property, both misdemeanor convictions. The jury made special findings that both offenses were acts of domestic violence.
“Domestic violence has no place in our homes or anywhere in our community,” District Attorney Valdez said. “The survivor in this case has great strength and I thank her for working with my office to seek justice.”
Following the verdict, Judge Stacey Donovan sentenced Martinez Vazquez to a total of six months in the county jail but then suspended the sentence for 12 months of probation.
Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on October 23, 2023, when Martinez Vazquez struck his then 26-year-old former girlfriend at her home in the 2500 block of Crestline Court. Martinez Vazquez also damaged a front door frame, drywall and a shower handle in the woman’s home. The woman declined medical attention at the scene.
Assistant District Attorney Jenna Phelps represented the State of Kansas. The matter was investigated by the Lawrence Kansas Police. The defendant was represented by local attorney Razmi Tahirkheli.
