Juvenile Detention
Douglas County is the host county responsible for the operation of a regional juvenile detention center serving a 13 county area in Northeast Kansas. The detention center is licensed for 18 residents.
What services does the Detention Center provide?
- Detention for youth awaiting court action
- Detention for youth serving court imposed sanctions
- Age range of 10 to 18 years of age
- Serves both male and female youth
- Typical length of stay is 1 - 90 days
- This length can be extended by the judge.

NOTE: The Detention center can serve any jurisdiction that completes necessary required paperwork and the juvenile meets qualifications for detention.

Other Detention facts:
- Detention Center staff assists with Surveillance of youth supervised on ISP/COR through field home visits and telephone contact.
- The detention center has been booking all juvenile for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office since June 13, 2003.
- County & Per Diem Funded
- Detention Center staff assist with monitoring of house arrest clients (both juvenile and adult) and their locations between the hours of 5pm and 8am, and also during weekends.
- They also assist with connection and removal of house arrest bracelets and equipment during those same hours.
- Detention Center staff act as backup for Juvenile Intake when there is no intake worker available to respond for juveniles being brought into intake. This can include, but is not limited to children in need of care or juveniles being booked into detention.
Day School
Detention Day School is a collaborative program between USD497 and Douglas County. The program was established in April of 1998. This program allows juveniles to remain in the community while still receiving the additional support they need.

- GED Preparation and Assessment
- Virtual School Coordination
- Transportation
- USDA – Free and Reduced Breakfast and Lunch Program
- Academic Materials (Computers, Books, Desks etc.)
- Counseling – Bert Nash Mental Health Center
- Art Instruction – Lawrence Arts Center
Services provided by Douglas County
- Staff Support
- Positive Behavior Supports
- Transportation (as needed)
- Transportation to and from school is provided by USD497, USD491, USD348, and USD343 as ordered by the judge.
- Should the juvenile be kept after school for any reason or amount of time and the school bus is unavailable, one of the Detention Center staff members will provide them with transportation home.

- Students have more resources if they are struggling with school work
- Students are able to remain in the community while still receiving more intensive supervision
- Students are able to complete credits toward obtaining their high school diploma
