4th District Commissioner - Gene Dorsey
Career Path
Gene Dorsey grew up in Gardner, Kan., graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the University of Kansas and spent a 35-year career working in the international oil and chemical industry.
He worked as a Corporate Auditor, Manager of Planning and Financial Analysis, Construction Audit Manager, and Financial Controller at the plant, division and joint venture company level. In these roles, he oversaw the preparation and analysis of operating and capital budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars, and managed teams comprising up to 225 staff members.
Throughout his career, various assignments took him and his family to live in cities such as Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston and Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, for five years. They also spent time in Princeton, N.J., before moving back to Lawrence in 2005.
Recent Years
His wife, Nancy, passed away in 2015 from breast cancer and in 2022 he lost one of his twin boys to heart failure brought about by Bipolar Schizoaffective disorder at the age of 39. He has three remaining sons.
Gene has served on the governing board of the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center for the past six years. He has followed County Commission meetings since 2016, attended the county budget hearings for the past two years and decided to run for the new District 4 that includes parts of eastern Lawrence, Eudora and Eudora Township.
This is Gene’s first venture into elective office since he was student council president at Gardner High School his senior year.
