Douglas County will celebrate National County Government Month with Discovery Day, a community event from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, in the Open Pavilion at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 21st and Harper Streets.

This family-friendly event will highlight vital services and programs that support the community while recognizing the dedication of county employees.

“We’re excited to connect with our community and share the services we proudly provide,” County Administrator Sarah Plinsky said. “From maintaining roads and public safety to supporting human services and conducting elections, we’re here to serve Douglas County.”

Event highlights include:

Touch-a-truck activities featuring vehicles and equipment from Public Works, the Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, Consolidated Fire District No. 1, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical and Maintenance.

Interactive games for all ages hosted by county departments such as Criminal Justice Youth Services, Administration, Clerk/Elections, GIS, Appraiser and Treasurer. Activities include a cake walk, bounce house and scavenger hunt.

Information and resources from community partners, including Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health, the Treatment and Recovery Center, Engage Douglas County and the Senior Resource Center.

The evening will feature live music and a broadcast by local radio station KLWN. Local food trucks – Barbwire Barbecue, JB’s Tacos and Pretzelly – will be on-site offering food for purchase.
