Local Food Fellow to study improving SNAP/EBT accessibility

Grant Misse, a senior at the University of Kansas, recently joined the Douglas County Sustainability Office as a Local Food Fellow. 

Grant will research and analyze Point-of-Sale (POS) systems and third-party processors that cater to small food enterprises, such as farmers, CSAs, and independent grocers, with a particular focus on improving SNAP/EBT accessibility. His goal is to identify affordable, user-friendly solutions that empower these businesses to accept SNAP/EBT payments with ease.

At the culmination of his research, Grant will deliver a comprehensive report featuring key findings and actionable recommendations. Through his efforts, he’s contributing to expanding food access and fostering new economic opportunities for local food businesses in Douglas County.

Grant is from Gardner, Kansas, and is studying environmental studies and music composition. He hopes to apply the insights he gains from this experience to help strengthen food systems throughout his career.

The Local Food Fellow position is funded through a partnership among Douglas County, K-State Research and Extension, and the USDA.
