Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez today announced that a jury returned guilty verdicts of assault with a domestic violence designation and interference with law enforcement against Robert Brothers Jr., 19, of Lawrence.
Brothers was acquitted of two counts of aggravated kidnapping. Judge Amy Hanley entered a directed verdict of not guilty on one count of theft of a firearm.
The state was represented by Valdez and Deputy District Attorney Joshua Seiden. The case was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department.
Sentencing was set by Judge Hanley for 9 a.m. Oct. 29 at the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center. Brothers will undergo a Presentence Investigation. The felony count of interference with law enforcement is punishable by 5-17 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections, depending on criminal history. The misdemeanor conviction of assault carries up to 30 days in the Douglas County Jail.
