Barn assessment grants available to Douglas County property owners

June 28, 2021 2:29 pm

For Douglas County property owners whose property includes a historic barn but who are unsure whether it’s worth saving or how to approach repairing it, there’s an opportunity to receive a barn assessment grant through the Douglas County Heritage Conservation Council. The Heritage Conservation Council (HCC) will hire a professional who has evaluated barns across Kansas and who has worked in collaboration with the Kansas Barn Alliance. The grants will cover the cost of the structural assessments and the reports will provide a scope of work needed for rehabilitation.

Six historic barns will be selected through an application process. Completed applications are due Tuesday, June 15, 2021. To be eligible to receive a barn grant, barns should be listed in the Kansas Historic Resource Inventory (KHRI) database as "eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.” Barn owners in Clinton Township are asked to contact the HCC Program Coordinator Jan Shupert-Arick to discuss their barns. She can be reached at jshupertarick@dgcoks.gov, 785-330-2878 or 785-766-8433.
