June 29th Officer Involved Shooting

On June 29, 2018, Officer Charles Stewart of the Lawrence, Kansas Police Department was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Crestline Drive to investigate the report of a disturbance.  Upon arrival Officer Stewart observed a vehicle leaving the residence.  Officer Stewart attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to yield to the officer’s lawful car stop until he parked the vehicle in the driveway of 620 Stowe Court.

The single male occupant, later identified as Abdul Jalil Hussein, exited the vehicle and walked to the front entrance of the house.  Officer Stewart attempted to stop Hussein from entering the house and was battered by Hussein.  Officer Stewart retreated to the cover of his vehicle and called for backup.  While Officer Stewart was waiting for backup Hussein exited through the garage and walked to the driver’s side of the vehicle that was parked in the driveway.  Officer Stewart ordered Hussein to show his hands.  Hussein brandished a firearm and pointed it in the direction of Officer Stewart.  There was an immediate exchange of gun fire from Officer Stewart and Hussein.  Neither Officer Stewart nor Hussein were hit.

Hussein retreated into the residence until he was later extracted by a Lawrence Police Department team.

This case was investigated by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office pursuant to an agreement with the Lawrence Police Department.

After review of the records and evidence presented to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, the District Attorney finds no criminal liability on the part of the officer for the discharge of his weapon.

Hussein is currently charged in District Court with multiple offenses.

All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.  Charges are merely allegations of criminal conduct.
