Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces that this afternoon Jared L. Wheeler, 21, of Oklahoma was sentenced following his earlier no contest plea to aggravated battery, a level seven, person felony.  The Court sentenced Wheeler to an underlying sentence of 13 months in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections.  The Court ordered him to serve 60 days jail time to be followed by 24 months probation with Community Corrections, the maximum sentence the Court could give.  The Court remanded him into custody to immediately begin serving the jail time.

Today’s hearing followed a November 21 plea hearing. The basis of the plea was that Wheeler held the victim down during the commission of a sexual crime.

Today’s sentencing hearing was held in the courtroom of the Honorable Paula B. Martin.  The case was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department and it was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney CJ Rieg and Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Britton.
