Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announced today that former Lawrence resident Orion M. Graf, 38, was sentenced late Wednesday in the Division Two courtroom of the Honorable Sally D. Pokorny following his May 12, 2015 no contest plea to attempted rape and attempted aggravated criminal sodomy. The plea negotiations were done in close consultation and with the input of the victim of the crime.

The Court sentenced Graf to 216 months (18 years) in the custody of the Secretary of Corrections for count one and 59 months for count two, running concurrent to count one. The Court also ordered 36 months post release supervision and upon his eventual release from prison, he faces lifetime registration as a sex offender.

Investigation into the case began when an officer with Lawrence Police Department was completing follow-up work on Graf’s earlier Douglas County District Court criminal case and the officer observed images that appeared to be evidence of criminal conduct. The images showed an unconscious female in various states of undress and sexual contact. Through work, officers were able to determine the identity of the victim. They contacted her and asked to speak with her. Through the officers’ conversation with the victim, they learned she had a prior relationship with the defendant, but she was completely shocked and extremely upset by the images they found on Graf’s electronic device. She had never given him permission to take nude photographs or for the sexual contact that was portrayed.

The case was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department with the assistance of the Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory. The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Amy McGowan.
