Measles Vaccine Guidance and Clinics

With the measles outbreak occurring in various states across the country, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department will host four community clinics around the county for people who want to receive the measles vaccine.

Four Clinics Hosted Around the County

The clinics will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.:

• Feb 18th at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St., Meeting Room B.
• Feb. 24th at the Baldwin City Recreation Office, 705 High St.
• Feb 26th at the Eudora Community Recreation Center, 1603 Elm St.
• March 3rd at the Lecompton United Methodist Church, 402 Elmore St.

Current Recommendations

The current recommendations are as follows:

1. Children should receive 2 doses of MMR with the first dose being given at the one year birthday. The second dose may be given at least 28 days after the first dose but is typically given at kindergarten entrance.
2. Adults:
   1. Adults born prior to 1957 are considered immune to measles and do not need to receive vaccine.
   2. Adults born during or after 1957 should have documentation of at least one dose of MMR or evidence of measles immunity.
   3. Adults attending college or other post-high school educational institution should have 2 doses of MMR on record or evidence of immunity.
3. Revaccination should be considered for the following:
   1. Persons vaccinated prior to their first birthday
   2. Persons vaccinated before 1968 with an unknown type of vaccine or with killed measles vaccine (KMV). KMV was first licensed in 1963 and withdrawn from the market in 1967 because it did not protect against measles virus infection.

Walk-in Clinics Available

The health department also offers the vaccine on a walk-in basis at its offices, 200 Maine St. in Lawrence, Kansas.

Attendees should bring their health insurance information. The department accepts all insurance.
