Built in the early 1930’s by the Civilian Lone Star Lake Park Conservation Corps, Lone Star Lake Park features recreational facilities and opportunities, including day use shelter areas, seasonal overnight campsites, restroom and playground facilities, a swim beach, boat ramp, and a community building available to rent for events.Douglas County owns and operates a 422-acre Lone Star Lake Park nestled within rural farmland in southwest Douglas County. The park features a 185-acre man-made lake which was created by damming Washington Creek. The park surrounds the lake and features a campground as well as many picnic areas along the edge of the lake. The present campground is the site of the former Lone Star Lake Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp which was used by the Corps while constructing the dam and creating the lake between 1934 and 1940. Originally, the camp had 26 buildings. Today, there are only remnants of the Lone Star Lake CCC Camp, including the stone water tower, four stone fireplaces, a stone firepit, and a stone staircase. Lonestar Lake is a flood control reservoir lake on Washington Creek in the northeast corner of Marion Township. Lone Star Lake is a significant geographic and historic feature in the township. It was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps beginning in 1934 and finishing in 1939. As part of the project, approximately 78 private lots were sold off around the southwest leg of the lake to raise funds for materials used in constructing the dam and creating the lake. The CCC was established in 1933 to provide employment opportunities for male U.S. citizens between the ages of 17 and 23.5 as response to the Great Depression. During its nine-years of operation the program employed approximately three million young men working on forest management, flood control, conservation, and state/national park projects. CCC projects maximized labor and minimized expenses for materials and equipment. For the Lone Star Lake project, labor, in the form of two CCC camps with approximately 400 total workers provided the muscle, while 100 shoreline lots were planned on the southwest leg of the lake and sold to raise funds for purchasing materials and property for the lake’s construction. Construction of the CCC camp began in September 1934. Construction on the dam and lake facilities began in October 1934 and stretched to October 1939. Construction of lakeside cabins at Lone Star Lake appears to have begun concurrent with or soon after completion of the lake.
