Natural Areas and Historic Sites of Southwest Douglas County

Join us for a discussion about the history and future of the southwest corner of Dougls County from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Marion Springs Event Center, 316 E. 900 Road in Baldwin City. The center is the old Marion Spring Elementary School, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

Local resident Tammy Lamb lives on land homesteaded by her great-grandfather and will share stories about her family's history in the area. The Kansas Biological Survey will present information abou thow the landscape has changed since settlement by early pioneers with a focus on native prairies and woodlands. Participants will be invited to share stories about the land and visions for the future of this area.

Informational handouts about resources available to help private landowners manage and protect their prairies and woodlands will be available from: Grassland Heritage Foundation, Douglas County Conservation District, Kansas Land Trust, Monarch Watch, KAWS/Upper Wakarusa WRAPS/Ducks Unlimited, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Tourism and Kansas Forest Service.

Coffee and cookies provided. No registration necessary.
