DA’s Office limits services October 24 and 25 to implement a new case management system

The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office will offer limited services Monday, October 24, and Tuesday, October 25, to implement a paperless case management system and to provide staff training on the new system.

The cloud-based platform, PROSECUTORbyKarpel (PbK), replaces two legacy systems that were used for case management and electronic discovery. Full office services are anticipated to be available Wednesday, October 27.

“Replacing these outdated systems will increase our ability to more effectively carry out our mission for a safe and just community,” District Attorney Suzanne Valdez said. “PbK enhances our day-to-day operations and we are grateful for this investment to better serve the people of Douglas County.”

Designed by prosecutors, the new system transitions the District Attorney’s Office to an electronic file system to improve case management, workflow management, grant reporting and record keeping. PbK also provides a victim portal to give victims access to case information and improved digital communication channels.

The board of commissioners approved purchase of the new system for $211,675 in December 2021. Funds for the modernization came from $250,000 leftover in salary allocations for District Attorney Office positions that had been left unfilled during the pandemic.

The PbK platform, developed by St. Louis-based Karpel Solutions, is used by more than 550 agencies in 31 states and has been selected by more than 40 Kansas county and district attorneys’ offices including Franklin, Geary and Reno counties.
