Why are volunteers needed?
Consolidated Fire District #1 is a combination department. This means there is a small number of full-time paid firefighters and volunteer firefighters make up the remaining need for emergency response. More than 75% of all fire departments in the country are volunteer or combination fire departments. Volunteers are a critical component of serving Douglas County for both Fire and Medical emergency response.
What skills or prior training should I have?
Volunteers should possess a desire to serve your community and enthusiasm for emergency response. First Responder volunteers should also be able to meet the physical requirements of the job.
No previous experience or training in fire or medical service is required. All volunteers are required to complete a CFD#1 Recruit Academy and earn Firefighter 1 and Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services Certification within the first year of volunteering. We will assist with this training. This is for the safety of the volunteer as well as other CFD#1 members and the public.
Will volunteering fit my schedule?
Only you can determine if you have the time to complete the training and volunteer. The experience as a First Responder is extremely valuable to the community and very rewarding for the volunteer.
Recruit Academy and most trainings are scheduled for evenings or weekends to accommodate work schedules. Volunteers are expected to spend at least 36 hours at the stations for additional training and ride-out experience. Academy and classroom training hours count toward the 36 hours per month. After certification, volunteers should maintain the monthly ride-out time and respond to emergency calls as available. This time is flexible to work with your schedule. We recognize that your personal and family needs take priority.
