- The group reviewed the current FPC budget. Less than $1600 remains for 2016.
- Farmers’ Market Project
- Recap from first site visit June 7-11 with consultants.
- The group shared thoughts about the visit of SCALE, Inc. Members who volunteered shared positive reflections about engaging with market consumers and the Rapid Market Assessment process. Marlin reminded everyone that SCALE will return again at the end of August. In the mean time, FPC leadership and staff will have regular calls with SCALE for project check-ins. Members interested in participating should contact Helen for more information.
- Food “System” Plan Update
- Marlin shared a need to make sure that that people feel like they play a role in the plan. The group decided to refer to the “food system plan” to help make the project more approachable.
- Marlin thanked the membership for all of their input and feedback over the past several months. FPC staff and leadership have refined the list of community stakeholders to ensure we’re covering all our key bases. After meeting with the Planning Department and FPC leadership/staff/Trudy, we have defined a plan for targeted focus groups and a more general, on-line questionnaire for anyone and everyone. This approach will allow folks to participate through two avenues.
- The timeline was also changed a bit due to meeting with City Planning Staff. FPC staff/leadership learned we didn’t need to push for completion before H2020. We can make sure that our initial public input process is longer than one season—it will now not just be summer, now into September.
- Members received and reviewed a new project summary sheet. Marlin asked members to help in distributing the survey. Those still interested in holding focus group should contact Helen if they haven’t already. The next key FPC role will be to set priorities in October, help host November policy forums, recommend policies in the plan, and veto language as we draft the plan.
- Marlin wanted to point to a few things
- Tuesday June 21 at 6pm, FPC will host a discussion with Jill Elmers, Mary Miller, Emily Ryan about the urban ag policies. The LPL has an information board in the entryway.
- With the agenda, Helen sent out a new one-pager that staff put together last week for a joint meeting of the County Commission, City Commission, and School Board meeting. Captured the work throughout the community. Spurred a meeting with new city manager Tom Markus.
- FPC member updates
- Elizabeth—reminded members about bios and photos for the website. She and the Community Subcommitee are collecting each member’s name, general location, favorite food, and affiliation.
- “Mock” FPC Focus Groups
- Led by Trudy Rice, K-State Research & Extension. FPC will be joined by past FPC members and current “Community Coordinators” working with Sunrise Project.
- Group decided to adjourn the meeting and have the FPC focus groups take place afterward.
- Public comments
- Joesph Kollhaf asked a question as to whether the council was interested in providing some fruit-bearing trees and public agriculture to be more inclusive for public to consume. Helen shared that the fruit tree issue came up during the urban ag process, and fruit trees in the public right-of-way can create a hazard for cars. She directed him to follow-up with the Lawrence Fruit Tree Project overseen by Sunrise Project. He also asked the FPC about the regulations that restrict Food Trucks from operating close to downtown. He wondered if there could be an exception for food trucks that used local food. Helen shared that these are the types of issues we’ll be engaging with through the Food Plan. She shared her card for more specific follow-up.
- Adjourn full council meeting (7pm)
