Need a car tag? Starting Monday, Oct. 28, the Douglas County Treasurer’s Office will offer its services in two Lawrence locations: the historic County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St., and a new office, 2601 W. Sixth St. Both offices will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

The public is invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the Sixth Street office. The new 5,054-square-foot accessible space will have a lobby area with chairs, close parking and a drop box. It is located on property that the county purchased with federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and then renovated with funding from the Capital Improvement contingency fund. The total cost of the project was $1.6 million.

“We are excited to offer our services in a larger building that will have more parking spaces and a lobby area. It will be more accessible than our current locations,” Treasurer Adam Rains said.

With the opening of the new office, the Treasurer’s Office will close the satellite office at 2000 W. 31st St., in south Lawrence, at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25. The 1,086-square-foot space is leased by the county for $28,000 annually.

The Treasurer’s Office will continue to operate its Baldwin City office, which is located inside Baldwin City Market, 112 Eighth Street. It is open on the second full week of each month.

Residents can also renew their motor vehicle taxes and pay property taxes online. Please visit, the Treasurer’s Office website - https://www.dgcoks.gov/treasurer - for more information.

The Treasurer’s Office collects and then distributes property tax monies to the state and other tax districts such as townships and school districts. They also operate the county’s motor vehicle department for the State of Kansas. They complete more than 130,000 motor vehicle transactions annually.
