Join us for a Fabulous Fourth Fireworks celebration

In celebration of Independence Day and our community’s perseverance during the pandemic, the City of Lawrence and its Unified Command partners: Douglas County, LMH Health, Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health, the University of Kansas and the Lied Center of Kansas have coordinated support of the Lawrence Jaycees’ community fireworks display, creating a Fabulous Fourth.

The Fabulous Fourth fireworks celebration will take place at approximately 9:45 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at the Shenk Sports Complex, located at 23rd and Iowa streets; however, parking at the sports complex will not be available due to the radius required to ensure safety during the fireworks.

The Lied Center of Kansas, 1600 Stewart Drive, will be available as a viewing spot and will have free live music beginning at 7:30 p.m. Music acts include:

• 7:30 p.m. – Ellie LeBar, singer/songwriter
• 8:40 p.m. – Spencer & Rains, folk music

Guests will be able to purchase concessions provided by KU Memorial Union and Nancy Marston will also be providing face painting leading up to the fireworks show at approximately 9:45 p.m. We ask everyone to clean up and dispose or remove all trash and items they bring with them to the parking/viewing areas. We also want to remind everyone that fireworks are not permitted in City limits.

For safety, barricades will restrict access to the fireworks area on Crestline Drive north of 23rd Street. Access will also be restricted on a portion of Becker Drive, around the restricted area. There will also be no on-street parking along Constant Avenue from the Shenk Sports Complex to the Lied Center parking lot to avoid congestion before and after the show. Please see the map, showing the restricted area, as well as defined areas for gathering near the fireworks launch site. 

This outdoor event brings together the community in celebration of working together and caring for each other during such a difficult time in our country’s history. This year also marks both the 100th anniversary of LMH Health and the 75th anniversary of Lawrence Parks and Recreation and helps celebrate their commitment to our community.

While the virus continues, it is also a time to remind everyone to get vaccinated and stay vigilant, practicing social distancing and wearing masks when not able to social distance.
