SMART Recovery group meetings available for Douglas County residents

June 7, 2021 4:45 pm

SMART Recovery group meetings are available for Douglas County residents at no cost every Wednesday and Friday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Smart Recovery group meetings are for anyone who is struggling with addictive behaviors such as alcohol, opioids, amphetamines, tobacco, gambling, pornography or binge eating. The group meetings are provided through the University of Kansas Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research and Treatment and The University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.

SMART Recovery is based in principles and practices of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It focuses on:

  • Building and maintaining motivation change.
  • Coping with urges and cravings to engage in addictive behaviors.
  • Managing thoughts, feeling and behaviors.
  • Living a balanced life.

The program also offers a SMARTline — 785-550-0764 — from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. It's a free service for people with addictions. The calls are individualized and vary in length based on needs.

For more information, contact: Bruce Liese, Clinical Director of the Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research and Treatment and a professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry, at bliese@kumc.edu.

Douglas County provides funding to help support the program.
