Public Works announces that pavement rehabilitation on portions of Routes 438 and 1029 will likely begin Wednesday, Sept. 25,  or Thursday, Sept. 26. It was previously scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 23. The postponement is due to a contractor delay in completing previously contracted work outside of Douglas County.

Work will occur on Route 1029 (East 600 Road) from North 2050 Road (East Seventh Street in Lecompton) to Route 438 (North 1800 Road, or Farmers’ Turnpike), and on Route 438 from Route 1029 to the existing pavement widening near the Berry Plastics facility.

In addition, Public Works will seek County Commission approval to extend the work on Route 438 east from Berry Plastics to the existing pavement widening at the K-10 (South Lawrence Trafficway) intersection.

One-lane traffic controlled by a pilot vehicle will be carried through the construction zone. Motorists should anticipate travel delays of several minutes. Every effort will be made to keep construction zones and travel delays as short as possible.

The Board of County Commissioners awarded a contract in the amount of $1.2 million to Hamm, Inc. for the work. The work includes patching deteriorated pavement areas and overlaying the existing pavement with 3 inches of new asphalt pavement. Public Works anticipates the work to be completed by the end of November 2019, weather permitting.
