Water activities to be temporarily prohibited at Lone Star Lake for herbicide treatment

August 19, 2019 3:44 pm

Douglas County Public Works will soon treat re-emerging areas of Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) in areas of Lone Star Lake with an herbicide. The treatment with an herbicide called Navigate is planned for Wednesday, August 14, and Thursday, August 15, weather permitting.

Lone Star Lake will be closed to water activities for 24 hours after treatment. Signs will be posted notifying park patrons of the closure.

The Navigate herbicide is in granular form. It sinks quickly to the lake bottom. While the herbicide has no restrictions for watering livestock, park visitors and residents are encouraged to keep their pets out of the treated portions of the lake for 24 hours after treatment.

Some EWM has re-emerged in areas of the lake following the last herbicide treatment in August 2018. EWM is a non-native plant that threatens native aquatic plants and lake ecology. Fisheries biologist Richard Sanders, of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism, has recommended the treatment and will accompany park maintenance personnel during the treatment.
