Douglas County Public Works anticipates opening Route 458 (N 1000 Road) from E 1900 Road to E 2000 Road to unrestricted traffic beginning mid-morning Saturday, July 27.
Work on the project is substantially complete. Seeding and incidental work will be completed after the road is opened to traffic. Traffic will be carried through these work areas. Short-term lane closures may be required during final work activities.
The project involves construction of safety improvements including replacing narrow culverts, flattening roadside slopes near those culverts, removing trees from the right-of-way, and pavement rehabilitation. Douglas County is receiving High Risk Rural Road (HRRR) federal funding for the project through the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). HRRR funding will cover 90% of the construction costs for the roadside safety improvements. Douglas County is responsible for 100% of the pavement rehabilitation costs.
KDOT opened bids for the project, and awarded a contract to Bettis Asphalt & Construction, Inc. in the low bid amount of $1.3 million. Douglas County’s Capital Improvement Program is funding the necessary local matching costs and the full costs of pavement rehabilitation.
* Note: Public Works still expects the closure of Route 1061 to begin Wednesday, July 31.
