Emergency Management seeks feedback on regional hazard mitigation plan

July 22, 2019 2:19 pm

Douglas County Emergency Management is seeking feedback on the Kansas Homeland Security Region K Hazard Mitigation Plan, which covers nine Kansas counties, including Douglas, and two tribes.

Mitigation is commonly defined as sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and their property from hazards and their effects. Hazard mitigation planning provides communities with a roadmap to aid in the creation and revision of policies and procedures, and the use of available resources, to provide long-term, tangible benefits to the community.  A well-designed hazard mitigation plan provides communities with realistic actions that can be taken to reduce potential vulnerability and exposure to identified hazards.

Specifically, the hazard mitigation plan was developed to:

  • Update the Kansas Region K 2014 Hazard Mitigation Plan
  • Build for a safer future for all citizens
  • Foster cooperation for planning and resiliency
  • Identify, prioritize and mitigate against hazards
  • Assist with sensible and effective planning and budgeting
  • Educate citizens about hazards, mitigation

Douglas County Emergency Management encourages residents to review and provide feedback on the pages pertaining to Douglas County. To provide feedback, email Interim Douglas County Emergency Management Director Joe Hoelscher at jhoelscher@dgcoks.gov.
