One-mile section of Route 458 to be closed to finish project

June 20, 2019 5:39 pm

Douglas County Route 458 (North 1000 Road) from East 1900 Road to East 2000 Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday, June 24, weather permitting, for the resumption of construction project activities. Route 1057 (E 1900 Road) will remain open to north-south traffic. A detour will be re-established following Route 1057 (East 1900 Road), Route 460 (North 700 Road), and Route 1061 (East 2200 Road).

In addition to the one-mile closure from East 1900 Road to East 2000 Road, traffic on Route 458 from East 1800 Road to East 1900 Road will be carried through construction in one lane and controlled by flaggers. Weather permitting, Public Works anticipates all project work will be completed and the road reopened to unrestricted traffic by July 31.

The project was suspended late last fall due to winter weather, and construction has been delayed this spring due to wet conditions. The project involves construction of safety improvements including replacing narrow culverts, flattening roadside slopes near those culverts, removing trees from the right-of-way, and pavement rehabilitation. Remaining work includes completing ditch grading in some locations, pavement rehabilitation between East 1900 Road and East 2000 Road, asphalt surfacing on residential entrances, and permanent seeding.

Douglas County is receiving High Risk Rural Road (HRRR) federal funding for the project through the Kansas Department of Transportation. HRRR funding will cover 90% of the construction costs for the roadside safety improvements. Douglas County is responsible for 100% of the pavement rehabilitation costs.

KDOT opened bids for the project, and awarded a contract to Bettis Asphalt & Construction, Inc. in the low bid amount of $1.3 million. Douglas County’s Capital Improvement Program is funding the necessary local matching costs and the full costs of pavement rehabilitation.
