Douglas County Commission to change time of meetings to help increase accessibility

February 13, 2019 11:11 am

Beginning March 6, Douglas County Commission meetings will be at 5:30 p.m. to help make it easier for the public to attend. Currently, meetings are at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Douglas County Commission meetings are held on Wednesdays on the second floor of the County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts Street. The day of the week and location will remain the same.

Also beginning March 6, county commissioners will have work sessions as needed at 4 p.m. before their regular meetings. The work sessions will allow commissioners to study and discuss projects with staff and other agencies. No action will be taken during work sessions.

Douglas County commissioners and staff are working to increase accessibility to information. Audio recordings of Douglas County Commission meetings are now available on the county’s website under reports and archives: https://dgcoks.gov/commission/reports-and-archives.

The county also recently hired Karrey Britt as its new communications specialist to provide information to the public. Britt previously worked as the communications coordinator for the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department for six years. Prior to the health department, she worked 16 years for the Lawrence Journal-World in a variety of positions, including reporter, copy editor and assistant managing editor. At Douglas County, Britt has been working to provide information through social media, news releases and its website. She recently published the county’s first newsletter that is available to anyone who wants to sign up for it on the website.

“My goal is to provide news that is timely and relevant to Douglas County residents through a variety of means,” Britt said. “Transparency is very important to Douglas County commissioners and staff, and my job is to help achieve that mission.”
