Court Gives Man 226 Months Prison Sentence in June 2017 Eudora Case

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces that today Eudora resident Danny W. Queen, 37, was sentenced after being found guilty at his July 2018 jury trial for crimes committed in June 2017.  The Court sentenced Queen to the aggravated sentence of 165 months for murder in the second degree, the standard sentence of 32 months for attempted voluntary manslaughter, and the aggravated sentence of 61 months for attempted murder in the second degree.  Counts Two and Three were ordered to run concurrent to each other and to run consecutive to Count One for a total of 226 months in the custody of Secretary of Corrections (prison).  At today’s hearing the Court also denied Queen’s Motion for a New Trial and his Motion for Departure. 

On June 24, 2017 at about 1:07 a.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to a 911 call at D-Dubs’s Bar in Eudora to a report that a person had been shot.  Upon arrival officers found Queen who was both detained and disarmed by bar employees.  Officers also found Mr. Bo Hopson who had suffered gunshot wounds to his chest and right arm.  Mr. Hopson was transported by air ambulance to the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas where he succumbed to his wounds on Sunday, June 25. 

At the jury trial the State’s witnesses described Queen as making lewd comments to a female inside the bar.  When Queen was asked to leave, he resisted their efforts which led to a fight between Queen and another bar patron.  Queen was physically subdued by others and he was laid on the bed of a flatbed trailer in the parking lot to calm down.  After resting on the trailer for several minutes, Queen pulled a handgun from his pocket and shot Mr. Hopson who had just offered to give him a ride home.  Queen then chased and attempted to shoot Mr. Clark Orth and Mr. Dustin Crowe. 

Today’s sentencing hearing was held in the courtroom of the Honorable Peggy C. Kittel.  The case was investigated by the Eudora Police Department and it was prosecuted by Chief Assistant District Attorney Amy McGowan and Assistant District Attorney Bryant Barton.
