Eudora Resident Convicted of Three Counts of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces today a jury convicted Eudora resident Sean G. Weeks, 40, of three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.  The jury found him not guilty of a fourth count of the same charge.

The victim who is now 15 years old came to investigators and reported the abuse in September of 2014.  Investigators learned Weeks began abusing the victim at the age of six and he continued the abuse until the victim was 10 years old. 

Weeks’ defense attorney denied during the trial that his client had ever touched the victim in a sexual manner.  The State presented evidence of a recorded phone call in which Weeks made certain admissions regarding the sexual abuse.

The trial was held in the Division Six Courtroom of the Honorable Peggy C. Kittel.  Jury selection began on Monday, May 23.  Attorneys gave opening arguments on Tuesday morning and the trial continued through most of Wednesday.  Attorneys delivered closing arguments Thursday morning and the case went to the jury at approximately 11:25 a.m.  The jury deliberated for the remainder of the day Thursday and returned today at 9:00 a.m. to continue deliberations.  The jury returned its verdict at approximately 10:15 a.m.

Weeks faces imprisonment for life and shall not be eligible for parole prior to serving 25 years.  The Court ordered a pre-sentence investigation be completed and scheduled him to be sentenced on August 5 at 1:30 p.m.  The Court also revoked his bond and remanded him to custody as he awaits his sentencing date.

Officers with the Lawrence Police Department investigated the case and Assistant District Attorney Mark Simpson was the prosecutor.
