Two Sentenced for February 2015 Home Invasion

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson announces today in the Division Three Courtroom, the Honorable Barbara Kay Huff sentenced Rachael Ann Hampton, 21 and Robert A. Long, 25 for their crimes committed on February 8, 2015, including a home invasion on West 19th Terrace.

Lawrence resident Hampton plead guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery, one count of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated burglary on March 4, 2016.  The Court sentenced Hampton today to 95 months prison.  Upon her eventual release from prison, she will be required to register as a violent offender for 15 years.

Lawrence resident Long plead guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery and three counts of aggravated battery on March 2, 2016.  The Court sentenced Long today to 415 month prison.  Upon his eventual release from prison, he will be required to register as a violent offender for 15 years.

The cases began the afternoon of February 8 when the Lawrence Police Department (LPD) was called out to a shooting.  The first officer responded to the address and found three victims inside the residence that had all sustained bullet wounds and one of the victims indicated he knew who had shot them.  Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical arrived and began to treat the victims.  One victim was transported by air ambulance to the University of Kansas Medical Center and the other two victims were transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. 

As the victims were being treated, detectives were quickly working to both process the crime scene and ensure public safely.  Other detectives went to the hospitals and began interviewing the victims while they were being treated.  Using a victim's cell phone, the detectives were able to confirm the identity of one of the suspects.  Through their thorough investigation, detectives learned that Robert Long and his girlfriend, Rachel Hampton, recruited Caleb Chrisman, a childhood friend of Long, to assist with the crimes. Hampton drove the two men from Chrisman's home in the Kansas City area to Lawrence. The three set up a drug deal with a Lawrence resident in a shopping center parking lot, as a ruse for the commission of an aggravated robbery (at gunpoint) of the first victim. Hampton then drove them to the home on West 19th to complete their plan for the next aggravated robbery. Long contacted one of the victims, by phone, requesting to purchase some drugs. Long went into the home alone, made his purchase, and left.  He returned to the vehicle, changed clothes and concealed his face.  He and Chrisman returned to the home, both with a firearm, and ordered the victims to get on the ground.  They demanded money and drugs. When one of the victims tried to get up from the floor, he was shot in the neck area, and later was shot in the back. To keep the victims down and contained in the living room, the second victim was shot in the lower back and the third victim was shot in the arm.  Two of the three victims required surgery.  Long and Chrisman ran from the residence with cash, drugs, and other items.  Officers with LPD and the University of Kansas Office of Public Safety searched the area for hours; however, the three escaped and fled out of town to Chrisman's house.

Chrisman was soon apprehended. LPD tracked Long and Hampton to New Mexico, and with the help of the US Marshals, finally apprehended the two in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Co-defendant Caleb K. Chrisman of Grain Valley, MO is scheduled for his next court appearance on this case on May 10 at 2:00 p.m.  Chrisman is presumed innocent of the charges until and unless he is proven guilty.

The cases were investigated by the Lawrence Police Department and were prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney CJ Rieg and Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Britton.
