Avoiding scams with Sheriff's Office

Hosted By: Douglas County Sheriff's Office

Douglas County Sheriff Jay Armbrister will give a presentation on awareness and prevention of phone and cyber scams that circulate regularly in the community, especially in targeting seniors, at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, at the Senior Resource Center of Douglas County, 745 Vermont St. Reserve your spot with Kim at 785-856-0203 or kluce@YourSRC.org.

The Sheriff’s Office regularly takes reports or receives tips from people in the community about those attempting to defraud residents, often posing at law enforcement officers and seeking payment alleging people or family members have “warrants” outstanding for missed jury duty or other fake reasons.

"These cases are heartbreaking to work, and the scams have become much more sophisticated in recent years," Armbrister said. “There are several red flags with requests to purchase gift cards or bitcoin, for example. A law enforcement officer will never ask you to pay money to immediately resolve a legal situation, so we always advise people to end the call and call our office number themselves to verify if it was a legitimate contact. We appreciate getting to talk about prevention tactics and ways to help people in our community."
