Student Voting Guidelines

In most cases, college students can choose whether to register to vote (or stay registered to vote) in their hometown or to change their registration to their new residence.

Reminder: voters may not be registered in nor vote in two states, for the same election.

It is important to know that a registered voter in Kansas is considered a resident of Kansas for income tax purposes and for motor vehicle registration/operation purposes. To register to vote in Kansas, you must be a resident for at least 21 days before an election.   You must also update any of your voter information, including residential address, at least 21 days before an election.  When voting, you must also present a valid form of identification.

Kansas residents going to college out of state:

  • If you are temporarily living out of state, you may wish to register to vote (or stay registered to vote) in Kansas so that you remain a resident of Kansas.
  • Be sure to update your voter registration with your current mailing address so your ballot can be sent!

Kansas residents going to college in another part of Kansas (and living there):

  • You can choose either to register to vote (or keep your voter registration) at your hometown address or re-register in the county where you are attending school.
  • Your voter registration address determines some of the content you will see on your ballot.
  • If you are keeping your registration at your hometown address, be sure to update your voter registration with your current mailing address so your mail ballot can find you.
  • KU students living on campus – Visit KU Housing for address and mailing instructions.

Out-of-state students going to college in Kansas:

  • You can choose either to register to vote (or stay registered to vote) in your home state or register in Kansas. To register in Kansas, you must be a resident for at least 21 days before the election.

  • If you are temporarily residing in Kansas, you may wish to register (or remain registered) to vote in your home state and vote by mail (if permitted by your home state).

  • KU students living on campus – Visit KU Housing for address and mailing instructions.
